Every great story begins with a time and a place. For Mount Gay Rum that time and place is the Caribbean island of Barbados in 1703.
Barbados is an island of warm sandy coral beaches, friendly and exciting culture and in the interest of making rum, a great wealth of natural resources.
Originally discovered by the Portuguese, Barbados which means “bearded ones” was the name given to the island to describe the lush “bearded” trees that grew in abundance. Later settlers to the island found the rich soil and favourable wet season ideal for growing sugar cane.
Rum, originally called “Kill-devil” by the Barbadians who first distilled it, is truly a product of this beautiful island. Mount Gay Rum, the oldest, most storied rum in the world, has been produced in Barbados with passion and unparalleled craftsmanship since 1703, thus earning it the title “the rum that invented rum”.

THE MOUNT GAY VISITOR CENTRE
Set against the brilliant blue of the Caribbean sea, and sky, our Visitor Centre invites guests from around the world to discover the secrets behind Barbados’ finest spirit. Greeted in our lush green garden, visitors will explore the history, heritage and craft of Mount Gay rums, while special tours treat you to a cocktail mixing session or a traditional Bajan lunch.
The HERITAGE MUSEUM offers visitors a fascinating glimpse into the illustrious history of Mount Gay Rum and the island of Barbados. The TASTING ROOM familiarises visitors with the time-honoured production process involved in crafting our rums, providing them with a unique opportunity to discover our brand’s signature tastes and aromas. In the PRODUCTION HALL, you are invited to step behind the scenes and witness a piece of our production in action: a finely honed process that ensures distribution to over 80 countries around the world, including Scotland, Ireland and Wales.
In the BAR AND LOUNGE you can explore the full range of rums, and watch mixologists craft delicious cocktails with a variety of fresh, local ingredients, in a relaxed friendly atmosphere.

Mount Gay Rums
Pure Silver – clean and aromatic in contrast to Eclipse’s rich smokiness, Pure Silver MG rum offers a balanced mellow harmony of sugar cane syrup and banana, infused with notes of peppermint and citrus.
Eclipse is the reference for character, body and aroma, by which our Master Blender Allen Smith uses to blend every variety of Mount Gay Rum. For many rum aficionados, Eclipse is also the reference by which all rum should be measured! Eclipse is a brilliant golden amber colour, and a luxuriously complex aroma.
Black Barrel – is a small batch, handcrafted blend made of matured double pot distillates and aged column distillates. In a process called finishing, the blended rum is then matured for a second time in deeply charred Bourbon oak barrels, releasing spicy aromas that are at once balanced and bold.
XO is an opulent blend of the finest spirits aged for 8 – 15 years. XO is blended with significantly older barrels of mainly double pot distillates whose crisper notes are rounded into sublte balance. It exudes the finesse that only time can bring and offers a true taste of paradise from the rum than invented rum.
1703 Old Cask Selection – in creating 1703, Master Blender Allen Smith selected the finest single and double distilled rums, from Mount Gay’s reserves. This is a discerning blend, sourced from rare barrels, that Allen has carefully monitored over the years. Forty four blends were necessary to achieve this subtle and harmonious spirit.
RUM PUNCH – traditionally Rum Punch is made using the ingredients rum, sugar syrup, lime juice, bitters, and a pinch of spice and loads of ice. When you visit Barbados, and arrive at your hotel you may well be offered a welcoming Rum Punch drink, or a Fruit punch without alcohol.
Punch comes from the Indian word “panch” which means five. The five refers to the five ingredients of sour, sweet, strong, weak and spice. The poem for Rum Punch goes- one of sour, two of sweet, three of strong and four of weak, a dash of bitters and a sprinkle of spice served well chilled with plenty of ice! Everyone makes them slightly differently.
